The words

Christ says He knows their works, that they are neither cold nor hot, and that lukewarm He will vomit out of His mouth. The reason follows straight after: I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing. The rebuke and its cause are given together.

The world it was spoken into

Laodicea had no water of its own. It piped hot mineral water about six miles from the springs at Hierapolis and cold water from near Colossae, and both arrived tepid and mineral-laden, foul enough to spit out. Hot water healed. Cold water refreshed. Lukewarm water was spat out. The city was famous for banking and gold, glossy black wool, and a Phrygian salve for the eyes, and after the earthquake of AD 60 it rebuilt without imperial help, and said so.

What the study opens

The plain call stands as every generation has read it: do not be lukewarm. Church on Sunday, the Bible unlived, no relationship with Christ, a heart never handed over to be changed. The water then shows what such faith is worth to Him, neither healing like Hierapolis nor refreshing like Colossae. Both are in the text. And His remedy in the verses after is not to try harder: buy from Me gold, white garments and eye salve, the very three things the city was proud of, because He stands at the door and knocks.

It is easy to build an assistant that agrees with everyone. Ask one how a person is saved and it offers kindness. Ask whether Jesus is God and it finds a way not to answer. That is not gentleness. A person who is never told the truth is never given the chance to receive it.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Word made flesh, fully God and fully man. He is the way, the truth, and the life. Through His death on the cross and His resurrection He reconciled us to the Father. He is Lord, Savior, and King.
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one God, eternally existing in three Persons, co-equal and co-eternal.

Koinonia is built on that, and it is built to hold it. Not to be inclusive. Not to be agreeable. To be led by the Word of God, and to keep the Word and its essence true.
